Hi Friends,
Creating a French style rug is easy and quick.
Using a stencil of your choice,
textile paint or fabric medium, stencil brush and blue painters tape
you can create a one of a kind rug just for your décor.
Here I gathered a couple small throw rugs
with a small nap and basically a flat style.
Next I choose my stencils to design each rug.
Placing the stencil in a pleasing position
I taped in place with blue painters tape to keep it from slipping while stenciling.
For the paints,
I like to use either FolkArt's Textile Paint
or mix
Fabric Medium in equal parts with basic acrylic paint.
I used black for this project, but the sky is the limit with your colors.
Once the paint is mixed,
I began to stencil using my favorite brush.
I also like to start in the middle of the stencil and work out
top to bottom.
This brush is an old friend and I have used it for years to stencil.
Worn and comfy, but so easy to use.
The rounded handle is very comfortable
and keeps your hand from getting tired.
Here is the finished rug.
Once dry, you can walk on it
and vacuum right over the stenciled design.
To help it dry faster for handling, I use a hair dryer
to help it along.
Using Textile medium keeps the surface soft
and helps from fading when washing.
However, a little fading does add shabby charm.
The next rug turned out like this~
So there you have it.
A French style rug
you could never buy in the stores,
but just as close
as your favorite stencil.
So easy to do and fun!!
See you next time.
Wishing you
Southern DayDreams,
Celestina Marie

Celeste, I was just thinking about you~ Your Rugs turned out Beautiful! I have never stenciled before, but thanks to Donna's inspiration(My Shabby Chateau) I picked up some Stencils at Home Depot. So I appreciate your tip on how to start with the Brush. The weather here is starting to warm up and I just can't wait to get outdoors for the Season and play~

Oooh, la, la! Your rugs are tres chic, Celestina! What a terrific idea, your stencils are perfect, and as you say, you now have one of a kind rugs! I didn't know there was such a thing as fabric medium. I'll have to look for it so I can play with my paints and fabric, too! Thanks so much for sharing!!
Oh my goodness these are wonderful! I can never find a rug I like because they are either too plain or too busy. These are perfect! I need to pay Big Lots a visit and pick up a plain rug or two. Thank you for sharing at What We Accomplished Wednesdays. Have a great week! ~Deborah

Hi Celestina,
I'm back again to say how much I love your gorgeous Frenchy rugs! Hoping that this message gets to you!
hugs!
LOVE this project Celeste!! The possibilities are endless. The French and the Vintage styles are perfect for so many decors. You could even do a couple for holidays. Wouldn't it be fun to be greeted by a HO-HO-HO at Christmas time? I've seen stenciled rugs at very nice antique and craft shows and they always catch everyone's eye! You've inspired me to try this Celeste. Thanks for the great idea. My kids gave me a stenciled welcome mat for my birthday one year... it has a doxie on it wearing a French bere and says Bone Jour. One of my fav things!
Have a wonderful week Celeste!!
lots of love & hugs, Edie

Dear Celeste, I think you are a fabulous talent. The Rugs are a fantastic idea. When I had my Design Studio I would have ordered a rug for sure. I am so impressed you
did the White house, twice.
We followed the same art path.
I am 77 yrs old so happy you are in the field. yvonne
I love it, Celeste! What a great idea! Sometimes the Frenchy looking rugs online or in stores can be expensive. How great that you can actually make up your own. I think that fabric medium is a plus to have on hand. I have that same Vintage stencil! : )
Great way to add some charm to the ordinary!
love these. celeste! thanks for the creative idea--really dresses up the entry:)
So very beautiful.
I love it, its an amazing idea!!! I don't have the stencils but I know I could free hand it, you have me inspired!
I like that so much! Making it is better than buying it to me! It is more satisfying. You have got to be a fun person to know, you remind me of a precious friend of mine. You both have the best ideas! Have a great weekend!
Just beautiful! And looks like such fun! Dallas was rainy when we visited, but we got some down time with the kids. Lubbock reminds me a lot of ABQ for some reason. And the antiquing was great! Happy weekend!

Celestina, You are just so smart! What a wonderful way to personalize a rug, and with a stencil, I might be able to do this. Visiting your blog today is giving me some great inspiration and motivation. Thank you. laurie
Another great idea!! I love stenciling and just finished some monogrammed burlap bags for our Easter table. Next on my list is the painted bucket you inspired, a milk can, and IF I build up enough courage, our dining table. ;)
Always leave your page SO inspired.
