You may not remember the old roof slate I created a
garden sign with many years ago.
Well, it needed an upgrade
and totally repainted.
So I repainted it with a fresh coat of paint
and added new jute for hanging.
This slate is larger then the pic looks
and is a generous 12 inches wide and 16 inches long.
The holes for the jute are the original when the slate was used on a roof.
When I taught painting classes, one of my students gave me a bunch of these
from an old house.
I was thrilled and painted many over the years.
All are gone now, painted and sold, but I did keep one for my garden.
For the design on the sign, I used one of my old vintage rose
paintings and made a copy right on my printer.
Next, I added the words, Rose Garden and ran it off.
Trimmed the white paper all around
with fancy cut scissors.
Now to the slate, I added distress ink the color of the background of the my print.
The distress brings out the texture of the slate.
Later I will add a walnut distress over this and the print
to give it some age and wear.
You know I love old treasures.
Next I used outdoor mod podge to apply my print to the slate
and let dry.
I love how the distress fills in the dips and valleys of the slate.
Here it is on the fence right above part of my rose garden.
Love it here next to the pot of petunias.
On to more garden fun and lots of time in the studio.
I just love springtime, don't you?.
Are you in your garden yet?
Joining,
See you next time with more garden views.
Till then,

Oh Celeste, I love your Rose Garden sign! What a lovely addition to your garden. (just thought I'd tell you, I have chives in my garden...right now - and that's it!)
Beautiful slate! How good to have a bunch of them to decorate, and you really have made a treasure here. Hugs,
Valerie
It is lovely, I love the way the distress fills in the dips too! That gives me an idea - I have some pieces of slate with a design on them. I should try your idea on them, they have faded from being outside. This would refresh them. Thanks for sharing!
I am ready to get into my little garden. So much to do and so little time,
It's just gorgeous,Celestina! What a great idea to make a copy of one of your beautiful painted roses! The distress ink really does give it what I like to call "that aged over time look":) It's a perfect addition to your garden. This is my very favorite time of year, I've been enjoying picking bunches of daffodils, but I know that your season is way ahead of ours:) Have a great day!
Your sign is beautiful! It looks wonderful hanging in your garden.
Very pretty, Celeste! It's great that you were able to just makeover the slate that you had. I think it is a wonderful addition to a rose garden.
What a beautiful sign Celeste, I just love your roses! ~Diane

Love the sign and what a terrific idea. It really turned out wonderful. Yes, this is my very time of the year since it's not to hot to work in the garden and watching your hard work bloom. Everything is so early this year since we had no winter. I am really surprised that everything is so beautiful since no rain to speak of.
Enjoy your lovely garden, my friend.
Mary
That is just beautiful and you are SO very talented. Your gardens are gorgeous, too. I can't wait to see something green and growing here. I think we lost all of our rose bushes this year...sadly....xo Diana
What a sweet project, Celeste. I love your creativity! The slate turned out just beautifully. I have similar to this tucked away in my basement that has seen better days. I need to dig it out and revamp it now. :) Thanks for the great tutorial!
xoxo laurie

I love old slate. The sign is the perfect addition to your rose garden.

I love your garden sign.
What a great tutorial for a gorgeous sign! LOVE it! There's nothing better to enhance the beauty of flowers like a personal handmade feature. Your talent always amazes all of us. I really like how you attached the artwork to the slate. So often I have better practice artwork than when I paint on an item. Distress inks are so wonderful to use. They add so much depth.
Thank you for teaching us how to create something special!!
Love & hugs, Edie
Beautiful rose sign!! I love using Distress Ink on my painted pieces.
hugs,

Super cute!
What a lovely garden sign. I had an English Rose garden when we lived in England. Oh how I miss it!
this is such a great way to use one of your paintings! tfs the technique!
Your rose garden slate is so pretty Celeste, and I love how it looks next to your hanging basket of Petunias.. xoxo Julie Marie
