Cabinet Door Sign

You know I am never done decorating,
 changing things and adding details.
Some time ago, I was traveling in Arkansas and stopped at a wonderful flea market and found these great cabinets doors for sale.

Not sure  where this flea market was, off the side of the road,
but those always seem to be the best stops.
Cabinet doors are perfect for signs, paintings and inspiration boards
with the frame built right in.
I sold many designed with paintings, French graphics and roses,
so I thought I would keep one for myself to place above my kitchen cabinets. An area I continue to work on and evolve over time.
First, I painted this treasure a cottage white and added an enlarged
french graphic using the blender pen transfer method, shared HERE,
followed by filling in a bit to darken with a Sharpie Pen.
The graphic is courtesy of
Since this is to be displayed up high, it needed to be darker.
See the smaller graphic? ~ this antiqued version was the inspiration for the look, yet leaving it light enough to be seen from the floor.

Next I began to antique the background and darken the framed edge.

Using acrylic paint in burnt umber and water, working quickly and applying with a soft cloth.
You can apply an extender medium to the paint for a longer work time if you have never done this. All these supplies are inexpensive
and available at most craft centers.

The color goes right over the words and then I float a bit more
color around the high points and edges.
Sand for a bit of distress and age.

To the framed area I darkened it  with the umber
and added black to the edge.
I also had some scroll appliques in my stash,
so I added those to the sides and top of the graphic.

Here it is in the new spot above the cabinets in my kitchen.

From a plain cabinet door~

To a French Graphic Display Sign.

If you come across these doors, don't pass them up,
they are great to create with.

Happy Creating.

Oh Celestina, it turned to be a beautiful frame with the French graphic!
I'm inspired to this kind of thing with the cabinet door. I might not try with French fonts because I'm not sure how to do it, but I will try with painting.

thanks for sharing!
have a wonderful day!

Even though you give step by step instructions, I would never be able to duplicate this beautiful design you've created, Celestina.
I love this!
It looks wonderful above your cupboards, with the pretty pitcher.
What a talented lady you are.

This is beautiful, Celeste! I have done a couple of these myself when I got lucky to find the cabinet doors. I have got to find a Restore here and see if they have any. Such a great idea for over the kitchen cabinets, too.

What can I say - you are so talented and everything you create is a work of art. That sign is just simply lovely and it looks so good with your black and white pitcher.
Next time I see cabinet doors, I am going to pick some up.
Have a wonderful weekend dear friend.

I just came in the house from having a garage sale! I advertised around the neighborhood: SHABBY CHIC SALE and the right mother and daughter team came and wiped me out in seconds flat! So I'm done for the day.

Oh Celeste, this is one amazing transformation! Very well done my friend. I love to see what you have next up your sleeve! Anita

Hi Celeste!

This project is so wonderful. I almost forgot that I purchased one of those pens to do this transfer version. I have several vintage sewing machine drawers I'm working on and this will be perfect. I love how the door has it's own frame! You are a genius! Your project turned out FABULOUS Celeste. It looks so great on your shelf. You never cease to amaze me!

Love & blessings, Edie

Celestina, this is just amazing! I am so thankful I came for a visit, and so is my husband. You see... my husband is in the cabinetry business and we have tons of out dated doors that I keep telling him we need to trash. He on the other hand, tells me that there has to be SOMETHING we can do with these doors. I'm not real creative with crafts so it is hard for me to visualize a "door" becoming anything. LOL :)
You have inspired the both of us!
By the way, I just love coming here as your place is warm, cozy, feminine, inspiring... I could go on and on. Just beautiful, and you as well.

Beautiful blessings! Debbie

Wow! Celestina!
You are incredible! I just love how you took that door and made it into something so beautiful. I just love French typography and the colors you added gave it that perfect vintage touch. I need to try that one of these days. God knows I have a huge list of projects to do. But it's so much fun, right? I don't know what I would do with myself if I wasn't creating or sewing..lol Thanks for sharing sweet friend. It's always fun to visit you. Have a wonderful weekend!

Celestina! Thank you for coming to my post this morning! Yes, I am thrilled that I have had a chance to practice my article writing skills and to actually be published now! But you must read The Waiting. It has altered my life as a writer but the bigger message is the faithfulness of God when we believe. Better have a box of tissues. I needed them! Happy day, Anita

Your gift is so inspiring and contagious, Celeste, and I for one am very grateful to know you. What you've done here, yet again, with this plain ol' kitchen door is spectacular!! But to me, the spotlight is always on your beautiful spirit shining through behind every detail of your creativity. There are so many creative souls out there, but not all possess this gift...splendor behind creation...and that is how "I" define a true work of art.

Thank you, my friend, for taking the time to visit my page AND to email me a note of encouragement. Means so much to me.
Have a colorful weekend. ;)
