Painting Red Geraniums

Painting all types of flowers is a real passion for me.
This week I was inspired by my garden geraniums to paint a canvas of blooms.

Mine are mostly pink, but I have a few red and I just need my painting to be done in red.
You know artists are like that,
we can make changes by the stroke of a brush!

So out with my 12x12 inch canvas, I base coated the background a light ivory.
That will change with highlights and shading as the painting goes along.

In the end, I have red geraniums ready to frame.
Layering color~

Adding shading~

Ageing with a dry brush~

Highlighting the petals and giving a brushing of blue for the background~

Going outdoors~

Bringing the outdoors inside~

Ready to frame or make prints for my shop.

Do you plant geraniums?
Here in Texas they do very well and tolerate the heat.
The heat we need right now to dry up the ground from all the record rain over the last month.
Flooded homes, roads, parks, lakes and so on have caused major destruction for many here in Texas.
Prayers go out to my neighbors that have suffered loss of homes and loved ones.
The good news is, we are predicted a dryer June.

See you soon~
Be Blessed

I do plant red geraniums as summer annuals, Celestina Marie, and I really love your painting. Prayers for all in TX, including several of my family. Though only slightly inconvenienced, many of their friends were impacted much greater.

Ooh I love this picture! I plant geraniums, sometimes red, but not always. They are a reliable plant aren't they! I have been stunned to see the flooding in Texas. Prayers for all those affected by it- so many tragedies occured- very sad. Glad to know June should be better.

Your geraniums are just gorgeous, Celestina! All of the detailing, colors and shading you've added make them just pop off the canvas! I can never get over your talent, I wish that I had just a fraction of your painting skills:) Geraniums have always been a favorite of mine to grow, they are so cheery and bloom nearly non stop. What a shame all of the devastation from the rains in Texas. I will be saying prayers, too. Hugs to you, my friend.

Such a gorgeous painting, Celeste. I adore geraniums and would love to have a big pot on the front porch. Sadly, I have terrible success with them.

Love the painting and was happy to hear that you are ok. I keep seeing videos online of horses and cattle being rescued, homes being swept away. Prayers for those in the path.
Flowers are one thing I never painted, always wanted to, just not sure how and its one of those things I keep putting off for later...when I have more time.
Did you take a class? I have never taken a class, just picked up a brush and went to it. Crazy, I know.
I do not do geraniums...don't really like then that much and everyone else does them. But- one year I found a purple one...oh, it was so pretty and I loved that one. Haven't been able to find another like it since.
I am more into waxed begonias...pink with red leaves...oh, I could plant trays and trays of them along the borders.
Hope y'all dry up soon and you can send some rain this way. We are 11" or so below average here. ;)

Hi Celestina :)

That painting turned out lovely. Red is a favorite of mine. I don't have any geraniums, but I'm thinking of getting some for my back porch pots, since they love the heat.

I'm glad to hear that you and yours are okay after the flooding in Texas. Scary stuff!

Thank you for taking us on your walk in the last post. It was beautiful :)

Living here in Dangerously Drought Dry California I am praying for Texas rain to come here while you safely dry out from horrendous flooding. Prayers for everyone. Love your painting. I have 12" x 12" canvases, paints, brushes and yet nothing gets painted by my non-artistic hands. We also don't grow gerraniums here as they freeze and die. Blessings Dear...

You, Celeste, are an artist! Gorgeous painting! I have many friends in Texas whom I have been communicating with often over the past month. Minor damage but nothing major personally! My bestie is friends with the McComb families and have felt their loss tremendously! So very sad! Sending prayers to all Texans! Blessings to you! Cindy

I love geraniums - they are wonderful in the garden, and they can even be used in baking:). So glad yours are growing well!
Have a fabulous June, Celestina!
Here in South Africa it has been raining since Sunday afternoon - the rain has been much needed, so we are very glad!
Hugs and love,

Your painting is gorgeous---you have an amazing talent! I planted geraniums, red in fact, in front of my house this past week. Serendipity? :)

That is so pretty, Celeste! I favor pink myself, although I used to plant red out in the front of our house to go with the red and white color scheme I would do there {back in NY}. This year I bought a dark purple that I never saw before. I paired it with some purple/chartreus coleus and a chartreuse-y colored licorice plant. Can't wait to see that urn filled out!

Beautiful painting Celeste! I love and have always wanted to learn to paint flowers and in particular geraniums! My mother is an artist and I did not get graced with that gene! You are a magnificent artist, what a gift!
I hope you are painting more now! If I could paint, would not be doing anything else!

Hi Celeste,
We have Geraniums in our back yard. Pinks, whites, and red ones. I like pressing them and putting them in pot-pourri as some do have a nice scent.
I like the painting too, it captures the spirit of Geraniums well.
Thank you for leaving a comment on my blog and following. I'm following yours as well.

Dear Christina!
How excited I was to read your note from Etsy! I missed visiting with wonderful friends such as yourself and thought of you and your gorgeous work often! I am so happy to see you are still creating such lovely pieces as these Geraniums (one of my personal favorites). This past 18 months was very chaotic for me and I had to do a lot of soul searching and re-evaluation of the direction my life was going and God willing I am on a good path now and will stay strong and remain the captain of my little ship in the future.
Thank you so much for remembering me and taking the time to welcome me back, it means a lot to me! Have a super day Christina!

Beautiful! This is just a stunning picture. I so admire your work. I do love geraniums, as they are very hardy and forgiving to non-gardeners such as me. I have pink and white this year.
Glad to hear you were not affected by any of that severe flooding.

I just love red geraniums but just have no where to put them where they can thrive. I would settle for a beautiful picture of them though, beautifully hand painted, like yours. It is too sweet!
